The Flys - See For Miles Compilation (1977-1980)

The Flys are one of pop music's best kept secrets. Unfortunately they happened at a time when pop music was temporarily kicked into touch, by the onslaught of punk. If The Ruts were the most poptastic of all the hardcore bands, with a punk attitude, then The Flys were their mirror image, combining great pop songs with a raw, staccato delivery which actually did have some people think that, they were merely one of the many punk, bandwagon jumpers. Anybody listening to this album will realise they were far more than that. They weren't just good in the studio either. I saw them live on several occasions and they were simply wonderful. The Bowie influence is obvious, but far more than this, The Flys displayed a rare talent for writing memorable and intelligent pop songs, which should have catapulted them into the top division of the genre. Unfortunately they got little exposure and are now virtually forgotten. One of the two main songwriters later resurfaced in a band called The Lover Speaks who released one amazing album in the mid eighties. The album included the sublime 'No More I Love You's', later covered by Annie Lennox on 'Medusa', but history repeated, as they once again sank without trace. Anyway back to the album in question. It has not got one bad track on it and my only complaint is, that through lack of available running time, many great tracks had to be left off it. Easy solution is to buy the two original albums 'Waikiki Beach Refugees' and 'Fly's Own', which have been reissued with loads of bonus tracks. The Flys are gone, never to return but we can still reminisce and dwell on what might have been.

London - Reboot

LONDON formed in 1976 in London and were part of the early British punk scene but within two years they had broken up. They released a few singles and in February 1978 their one and only album ‘Animal Games’ was posthumously released. By this time, however, they had all gone their separate ways. with 34 years delay! "Reboot" is the second full-length album.  Ten brand new punk cuts with interesting The Who-hints. Includes The Eyes’ cover "When the Night Falls".
 Great, meaningful comeback! They're not too old for kickin' Punk Rock!

Long Tall Shorty - Sound Of Giffer City

Long Tall  Shorty  were formed in 1978 as one of the earliest and best Mod Revival band, split up in 1982 and reformed in 2000.  2009, they are back with 15 new songs incl. a Re-working of their old live classic ANTI CND which has never been previously recorded by LTS. And the music is more or less the same as in the early stages - Mod Punk with powerpop, The Saints, MC5, The Dead Boys, The Heartbreakers, early Sham 69, Angelic Upstarts and more... So once again they epitomized the pure Mod Revival sound with incorporate the agression of Punk and call it today Giffer.

In questo disco, diciamo la verita' i pezzi non sono forse così epici come nel precedente cult album Faccia a faccia, ma scalda il sangue  questo disco alle persone amanti della musica reale, la musica della strada, che lottano contro la dissoluzione di una mentalità, quella skinhead, che cercano l'unione dei giovani e odiano il razzismo. Gli  Evil Conduct  vengono dai Paesi Bassi e sono una  skinhead band. "Rule ok" è il loro quarto lp. 12 tracce alla 4 skins/last resort.. insomma la classica Oi band e il classico Oi album..c'è tutto:  la classe operaia,  l'amore per la propria terra, il pub, critica sociale, rabbia, speranza e no!  Non è la solita retorica Oi come qualcuno potrebbe pensare, è la vita nel quotidiano è la loro vita e la riportano sui solchi di questo disco di rock'n'roll di strada, tutto molto semplice.  Se siete Bootboys, Skinheads, Herberts, Punks..questo disco fa per voi..

Accident - No romance for you

Gli Accident, vengono dallo stato di Washington. hanno lasciato come unica testimonianza  nel 1979 un 7 pollici contenente due pezzi: Kill the Bee Gees (uscita anche su uno dei vari Killer By Death) e True detective. Grazie alla Demolition Derby, abbiamo la possibilità di ascoltare tutte le canzoni incise durante la registrazione del 7". Un punk scarno, poco elaborato, ma molto personale anche grazie all'alternarsi di voci della cantante Lisa e del bassista Trent. Questa caratteristica li rende abbastanza assimilabili ai Rezillos di "Can't stand with..", anche se rispetto agli inglesi gli Accident hanno un approccio musicale piu' immediato e meno tecnico.

Le cose migliori Strummer  subito dopo i Clash, le ha fatte per il cinema coi Latino Rockabilly War, due ottime colonne sonore : Permanent records e Walker. Questa outtake, risulta ancora piu' bella di permanet records, soprattutto per i pezzi che non compaiono nell'originale, c'è uno spirito r'n'b quì molto piu' sanguigno.. molto piu'  Strummer.

Kraut - An Adjustment to Society

I Kraut si formano nel 1981 a N.Y. La loro prima fortunata performance è aprire per i  Clash al  'Bond Casino'  nel giugno del 1981. Nello stesso anno registrano questo primo lp 'An Adjustment to Society', successivamente aprono il concerto per i Professionals di Steve Jones e Paul Cook a Boston. Lo stesso Jones, già amico della band aveva suonato in alcuni brani di questo lp. Poco dopo il suono dei Kraut vira verso un hard rock.. ma questo 'An Adjustment to Society', resta la loro migliore produzione hardcore punk. Altamente consigliato.

Venivano da new Orleans, dove  hanno pubblicato l'ep  'Guns of revolution' (1978). I Red Rockers hanno dato una svolta decisiva alla loro carriera quando si trasferiscono a San Francisco, e la  pubblicazione questo LP 'Condition red' (1981), ideale punto di arrivo del loro originario stile a metà tra i Clash e il punk melodico californiano. Non brillano purtroppo nei futuri lavori.

The Epileptics - System Rejects

Questo cd contiene il loro primo Ep 'The licks' e il postumo live EP 'Last bus to Debden'. Il rimanente di questa compilazione include live e prove risalenti a marzo '78 e novembre '79. Tutto comunque è molto amatoriale...  Contiene inoltre il pezzo 'Tube disaster' piu' avanti registrato dai Flux Of Pink Indians per la Crass records nel 1981, e una versione di 'Submission' dei Pistols. Una superba antologia questa, edita dalla Overground records nel 1996 specializzata in questo genere di lavori.

THE ART ATTACKS - Outrage & Horror

Gli Art Attacks furono una punk band britannica, intelligente e divertente, ma sfortunata.... supportarono  live gruppi come The Motors, Generation X, 999 e The Lurkers..  fecero qualche concerto al Vortex , li troviamo sull' album : 'Live at The Vortex' (con Maniacs, The Wasps..) e nell'eccellente compilation 'Streets'. Incisero due singoli:  I Am A Dalek" / "Neutron Bomb" e "Punk Rock Stars" / "Rat City".  Ma ottennero poco o niente in termini di visibilità.  Questo cd su Overground records,  raccoglie tutta la loro produzione: 20 pezzi, tra singoli, Live e demos. Consigliato ;-)

HEART ATTACK - the last war 1980-84

Heart Attack  ottima punk band della scena newyorkese dei primi anni '80.. probabilmente la piu' giovane punk band dell' area all' epoca.. il cantante chitarrista aveva 12 anni il piu' grande del gruppo 16..fortemente influenzati dal punk inglese, Pistols e Clash. Nei quattro anni di vita del gruppo passano da un  punk beffardo, ad un rabbioso  hardcore. grande cd, una raccolta da avere!

The Leyton Buzzards - From Jellied eels to record deals

The Leyton Buzzards si formano nel 1976. Il bassista Jaymes è anche voce. Gli altri membri sono Geoff Deane (voce) Vernon Austin (chitarra, voce), Kevin Steptoe (batteria) sostituito successivamente da Tony Gainsborough, Milton Reame (già nei Steve Earley e the Cockney Rebel) alle tastiere. Nel 1979 i Buzzards vincono la competizione organizzata dall emittente radiofonica BBC1  e dal giornale The Sun : The battle of the bands che li porta di li a poco con un importante accordo con la Chrysalis e di conseguenza un apparizzione a Top of the Pops. Il loro primo singolo con la Chrysalis : Saturday night, segue We make a noise prodotto da Chas Chandler degli Animals . Le cose sembravano andare bene  ma,  nel 1980 dopo una serie di singoli e  Lp che vi propongo: From Jellied eels to record deals. I Buzzards si sciolgono..peccato.  Il suono , un po' Clash un po'  proto Oi!. Ottimo punk rock.

Gli ormai ultra-vetarani Vibrators propongono un album con vecchi loro cavalli di battaglia assieme ad altri classici di  bande degli anni 70 i soliti pezzi stra-noti tra l'altro, quì in versione sovralimentata, suonano solo un attimo piu' duro a mio parere, nulla di piu'. Comunque per i punkers vecchi e nuovi un piacevole disco.. forse.. ma per me che non sono un loro aficionado nulla aggiunge e nulla toglie al gruppo. V.A. - This Is Rockabilly Clash

Non mi piacciono gli album tributo.. non mi và che si stravolga il brano originale così tanto da farlo sembrare un altro. Detto ciò, con questo post faccio sicuramente un’eccezione, "This is Rockabilly Clash" è un signor tributo (dovuto!) ai Clash, sono convinto che da "London Calling" in poi molte cose siano cambiate anche per le bande Rockabilly. Ben venga quindi questo disco, dove i pezzi originali sono si rivisti, ma semplicemente suonati come un gruppo con gli attributi farebbe in uno scantinato, suonati in versione puro Rock'n'roll !! Lo stesso Strummer (R.i.p.) avrebbe sicuramente apprezzato.

The Adicts - 'The Collection' (Sound of Music + Smart Alex + bonus)

In un solo post, il secondo e terzo album di questi drughi inglesi. "Sound Of Music" è il loro secondo lp del 1982 (Razor records).. ed è piu' morbido rispetto a "Songs Of Praise" l'album di debutto, mostra una certa propensione alla new wave, ma resta sempre un album punk.. contiene classici come: How Sad, Chinese Takeaway, Joker In The Pack ..

il terzo album : "Smart Alex" esce nel 1985 (Razor records)  in un periodo non proprio felice per gli Adicts, e in questo periodo firmano anche per la Sire records nota major, che impone alcune regole: un atteggiamento piu' mainstream..meno punk.. il disco contiene comunque brani di buon livello: la title track Smart Alex,  Bad Boy, Runaway..

Questa edizione della Taang records contiene infine alcune bonus tracks prese da 7" e 12" singoli, e da session alla Sire records.

Vicious Rumours - Best of..

I Vicious Rumours si formano nel 1979, e come tante altre bands di  allora iniziano a suonare nei clubs e negli oratori del sud est di Londra. Le loro influenze musicali di quel periodo erano Sex Pistols, Adam Ant ed i Clash.

Intorno al 1980-1981 la scena punk stava cambiando. I Cockney Rejects avevano preso d'assalto le classifiche, e stava emergendo una "nuova razza".. i kids volevano bands al loro livello, erano stanchi di band che predicavano filosofie punk mentre e chiedevano soldi.. Oi! era questo, era suono della strada ed era lì alla portata di tutti! Iniziano a farsi sentire in giro, supportano i Business di Micky Fitz. Lentamente le cose stavano accadendo..iniziavano a nascere i prim anthems : THIS IS YOUR LIFE, TAKING THE BLAME AND SOUL PATROL ...suonano con: CONDEMNED 84, SECTION 5, INDECENT EXPOSURE e INTENSIVE CARE.. tutta pubblicità insomma.. suonano anche al "MAIN EVENT" catturato su vinile come: Oi! The Main Event (la compilation Live con, tra gli altri: The Magnificent, Judge Dread, Section 5, Business...e i nostri Vicious Rumours appunto). Appaiono in "Son Of  Oi" e "Oi of Sex"  le mitiche compilation che seguirono a "Oi Oi That's Yer Lot". Vi propongo questo Best of, che raccoglie tutti i classici e che porto' la band a ricalcare i palchi, non so' se siano ancora in giro, ma se amate la musica sincera e stradaiola, se amate l'Oi! Gustatevi questo best, ne vale la pena . ;-) Cheers!

Major Accident - Clockwork Heroes

Leaders del movimento Clockwork punk dei primi anni 80, i Major Accident arrivano dal nord est dell' Inghilterra e realizzano 5 singoli e qualche lp's prima di sciogliersi nel 1987. Tutti i loro singoli lati A e B piu' classici dagli lp's sono contenuti in questa  raccolta.  Riformati fine anni  90 hanno fatto uscire altri dischi, ma  il loro essenziale coi  pezzi classici è questo disco.

Straw Dogs : '91 - '97

con ANOTHER MAN'S POiSON e ARGY BARGY, gli Straw Dogs furono tra le bands  piu' reali del panorama Oi! britannico negli anni 90. Alcuni loro membri formarono successivamente gruppi come Super Yob, Cocrete gods..ma veniamo a questa raccolta: le prime due tracce "Dead On Arrival" e "Rock and Roll Disgrace" sono tratte dal loro primo singolo su Hammer records, seguono tracce tratte da complilation : "Little Boys In Blue", "Skinheads Are Back", e "Cheap Imitations" e ancora pezzi tratti ancora da 7" pollici: "Another World" / "Millions Like You" e "Alright Boy" / "Hope and Glory"..registrazioni un po' grezze ma  questo è il reale suono della strada, della working class, questo è Oi!

Bullshit - target

N.I.A. Punx - Scendere a sud

Auguro questo blog, con un post sui miei concittadini N.I.A. Punx (Nerds In Acid). Questo "scendere a sud" era il loro lp d'esordio su Mister X usciva nel 1993. Lo acquistai entusiasta, bello nella grafica, con mega poster interno apribile pieno di foto e coi testi. La parte musicale è punk rock/oi e hc vecchia scuola, le tematiche riguardano il disagio sociale, lo sfruttamento. Le mie preferite "unsatisfied", "voice of freedom", l'hc veloce di "sdp" (stato di polizia permanente) non male la cover di "Rudy.." di Dandy Livingston con tanto di cazoo che la rendono molto busker a mio parere. Originale interpretazione, poi "in ginocchio mai", oi classico, "questa città" è la cover coi testi rivisti in italiano di pay to cum dei Bad Brains!! chiudeva l'album una  ballata acustica "Scendere a sud" l'amore per la propria terra contro ogni luogo comune.
Questo lp's si trova anche su altri blog, la particolarità di questa versione è che ho voluto aggiungere diverse bonus tracks, prese da compilation cd, ep's e dal primo demo tape.. Che dire, buon ascolto!
